Course Descriptions

Art I (I Credit)

Art I is designed as an overall introduction to the basic areas of visual art. Students are exposed to a variety of art categories such as drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking and are introduced to art history, art appreciation, and art criticism. The development of the student's visual literacy is begun. Emphasis is placed on classroom participation and individual student effort. Art I is primarily a skill building course designed to lay groundwork for more advanced art activities in the future. For 2009-20I0 school year, only freshmen-juniors are eligible for Art I.

Art II (I Credit)

Art II is designed to provide a more advanced Study in various areas of visual art while focusing on the development of art throughout history.  Students are allowed to explore in depth art categories such as drawing, painting, illustration, sculpture, ceramics and graphic design. Individual expression and originality of ideas is fostered in studio work. The development of art appreciation is continued through written and verbal discussions about contemporary and historical artworks. Students will critically analyze various artworks through written and verbal assignments. Prerequisite:  Art I with a C or higher.

Art III is designed to provide students with an opportunity for a more advanced year of study. Encouragement of individuality and communication of ideas is drawing and painting techniques. The students will work in the media areas that they choose during the second half of the school year. Assignments are designed specifically for each media selected. Teacher permission is required to enroll in this class. Prerequisite:  Art II with a grade of C or above.

Art IV (1 Credit)

Art IV is designed to provide students with an opportunity for in depth study in art areas of specific individual interest. Under direct supervision of the teacher, students are allowed to work independently for most of the school year. Creative and original approaches to ideas are encouraged in all studio work completed for the class. Teacher permission is required to enroll in this class. Prerequisite:  Art III with a grade of B or above.
